Botox for tooth clenching, grinding, bruxing and ‘square’ jaw reduction at Pearl Dental and Facial Aesthetics Clinic

As the recession continues, and stress levels increase, we as dentists are seeing more and more patients complaining of chronic grinding or clenching of the teeth, often with associated complications such as headaches, cracked or broken teeth, or excessive tooth wear. Additionally, the overuse of the chewing muscles (the Masseters) leads to bulking up of these muscles, often leading to a square facial appearance. Most women consider a square jaw to be rather severe and masculine, and an oval shaped face is generally considered to be more feminine. This is known as masseter hypertrophy or more commonly, square jaw.

Injection of a muscle relaxant into the muscle can be used for facial contouring / sculpting, and by weakening the masseter muscle, can give a softer angle to the jaw.  This is a highly successful, non-surgical way to beautifully contour the lower face to create a slimmer, more feminine jaw, or to manage the detrimental effects of excessive tooth grinding.

Visible effects take place within 2-4 weeks, and full effect is seen in 2-3 months.  The effects of such muscle relaxing treatments usually last for 6-12 months, depending on the individual, and may be longer if 2 treatments are given. The treatment is quick, relatively painless, and has few adverse side effects, and costs in the region of €300- 350.

Treat your Feet between Pedicures

Home and professional foot care from Pearl Beauty, Dublin 2

The feet are an important part of the body which we can neglect at times. They support us all day long and we definitely do not look after them enough.

Here are some tips on how to look after your feet at home between your Pedicure appointments at Pearl Beauty Salon.

  1. Bath your feet at least once a week. Add some tea tree oil/ wash to the warm water as it is naturally anti- bacterial and cleansing. Or add Epsom salts if you find your feet are prone to swelling.
  2. After the feet are cleansed use a foot scrub to get rid of any flaky, dry skin, leaving the feet refreshed and smooth. You can mix up your own scrub at home with coffee grains/ brown sugar and olive oil. For a more luxurious treat for your feet, buy Jessica Zen Spa foot scrub at Pearl Beauty Salon.
  3. For the next step, you will need a hydrating and softening cream to massage into the feet. This will work to hydrate the skin. Pay particular attention to the skin around the ankles and the soles of the feet. You can mix up your own foot cream with honey, almond oil and cocoa butter. This can also be left on overnight with cotton socks for a more intensive effect.
  4. Your feet should now be nice and soft, which is perfect for doing cuticle work. Rub some oil around your cuticles, gently pushing them back. You can choose from a range of oils, lavander, peppermint etc. Try to carry out this step at least twice a week, leaving your oil in a convenient place to use.
  5. Try to cut/ file your toe nails once a week, always cutting and filing in a straight line across to prevent ingrown nails.
  6. If you are suffering from fungal toe nail infections, ingrown toe nails, verrucaes or anything on the feet you are not sure of, please visit a chiropodist sooner rather than later.
  7. Always wear shoes that are the correct size and that support your feet properly.
  8. When painting your nails always use a base coat before colour to prevent discolouration of the nail plate, and never leave your colour on for more than two weeks.
  9. Try not to walk often in your bare feet as this can harden the skin on the soles of the feet, and always walk from heel to toe.

Dental Implants from €1500 at Pearl Dental and Beauty, Dublin 2

Dental implants at Pearl Dental, Dublin 2 are more affordable than ever, with fees from €1500 for multiple units. And these are Ankylos implants, one of the leading implant manufacturers in Europe, not mini-implants or obscure cheaper implant types. The fee for a standard dental implant at Pearl Dental includes everything- assessment, surgery stage, restoration and review visits. There are no hidden fees to surprise or disappoint, and we pride ourselves on our committment to service and customer satisfaction. Please note that a definite quote can only be provided after assessment, as there are many factors that influence the treatment plan, and therefore the cost, of dental implants.

A dental implant is generally the most complete and effective method of replacing a missing tooth, and is a remarkably civilised procedure, generally requiring no time away from work, (except the treatment appointments), usually involves little or no pain, and is now an incredibly reliable procedure in the hands of a competent and experienced dentist who is prepared to take the necessary time and care to ensure success. Dental implants are not a procedure to be undertaken during a weeks holiday to foreign climes, as the planning, consent and undertaking of such procedures requires more than a cursory visit, and dental implants that go wrong often require immediate intervention, which can be much more difficult to access if the dentist is 3 hours away on a plane!

Many successful and competent dentists carry out dental implant procedures in other countries, but if they tell you that you only need a weeks visit, move on to the more conscientious dentist who accepts the fact that implants need careful planning, careful explanation and consent, and a high level of technical skill to be successful. Wherever you decide that your implants will be carried out, ensure that the dentist is expecting at least 5 or 6 visits from initial assessment to final restoration, and ensure that they give a warranty of at least 5 years on all the work, with no further cost to be incurred by you if anything goes wrong.

Here at Pearl Dental, Dublin 2, we guarantee all of our dental implants, fixtures and crowns for a minimum of 5 years (subject to certain criteria), and don’t expect you to pay for anything should there be a failure in that timeframe.

Finally, be aware that dental implants require excellent maintenance regimes, both by you, and your dentist. Here at Pearl Dental, we advise all of our dental implant patients to see our hygienist, Joann, on a regular basis to ensure that the implant is maintained impeccably, along with the rest of the teeth, and to ensure that the patient’s oral hygiene is optimised to maximise gum health.

Facial Aesthetics at Pearl Dental and Beauty, Dublin 2, and also Newbridge, Co. Kildare

As many of you are aware, here at Pearl Dental Practice and Beauty Salon, we aim to please, and are committed to bringing you as complete a service as possible under one roof, making it possible for you to arrange just one visit to source all your dental, beauty, skincare and product needs. In addition to this, we also offer a facial aesthetic service, allowing you to say goodbye to those lines and wrinkles with the minimum of fuss.

Following a consultation with our Facial Aesthetician, and Cosmetic Dentist, Dr Paul Redbond, your concerns and requirements can be assessed, and appropriate options discussed and prescribed as required. As injectable line and wrinkle treatments are a prescription only product, it can only be prescribed and administered by a suitably trained and qualified professional, and for optimum results, appropriate dosage and use is imperative. In some cases, injectable treatments are not an appropriate treatment option, and in these circumstances, we will advise of other possible treatment options that may address your concerns and requirements.

You have all heard of some of the procedures and products used for the management of lines and wrinkles, which include muscle relaxing injections, Collagen based fillers and more. We can provide any of these where appropriate, and can advise as to the best treatment option for your specific case.

In simple terms, the treatment options are grouped into 2 categories- Dermal Fillers, such as Restylane, Juvederm, Softline and Teosyal, and Muscle Relaxants, or ‘muscle freezing injections’.

The Dermal fillers are exactly that, and are usually based on Hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring substance in almost all animals. The product is injected into the skin, just underneath the region of the line/ wrinkle, and immediately ‘fills’ the area to lift the line and reduce it. The muscles in the area are still fully functional after filler treatments. The treatment can sometimes be undertaken with topical anaesthesia only, but for more complex cases, dental anaesthetic injections are used to numb the area before treatment commences.

Generally these products are used for the lower part of the face around the nose and mouth, but other areas can also benefit from this type of treatment. Most dermal filler treatments would last between 6- 18 months, and can be repeated as required.

The Dermal filler treatments can also be used for enhancement and recontouring of the lips, and reshaping of the nose and other facial areas, and because the products are naturally broken down in the body over time, you cannot be left misshapen or disfigured as a result of this treatment.

Muscle relaxing or freezing injections act directly on the muscles responsible for most lines in the upper section of the face (forehead, between and around the eyes), and block the nerve endings which cause the muscle to contract.  The active product is a toxin, but in the doses required for aesthetic treatments, is considered completely safe, and much larger doses are used for medical procedures than we would ever be using.

The treatment is not instant, but takes effect over a period of approximately 2 weeks, after which it will generally last between 3- 6 months before a top-up is required. Usually, no anaesthesia is required for the administration of muscle relaxing injections.

Dental Hygienist Services at Pearl Dental Practice and Beauty Salon, Dublin 2

A Dental Hygienist visit keeps teeth in tip-top shape

Probably the most undervalued and abused member of the dental team, both by dentists and patients, Dental Hygienists have a hard life, as many dentists use them as a depository for all the patients and work they don’t want themselves, and many patients don’t quite understand their role when they’re sent to see them.

In our world here at Pearl Dental, Dublin 2, our hygienist, Joann, is considered a vital part of our dental team, and helps maintain optimum oral health for our patients, as well as ensuring that complex restorations are cleaned and maintained as they should be, for maximum lifespan. One of the most important tasks that a dental hygienist undertakes is the treatment of gum disease and the maintenance of the gum health thereafter. If you have bleeding gums, or find that your dentist spends only a couple of minutes cleaning your teeth at your check-up visit, it’s probably time to see the hygienist to find out what a properly clean mouth feeels like.

That smile needs care. Your hygienist is the ideal person to provide it.

If you want a clean, healthy mouth, perfect oral hygiene, and immaculately kissable breath, a hygienist should become one of your best friends, as she will be able to advise you on the most appropriate oral hygiene techniques for your mouth, will clean your teeth more diligently, and more thoroughly than the majority of dentists, and should take a personal interest in you becoming a paragon of oral health. She is generally able to treat the majority of cases of gum disease, and you can see her as often as you wish to maintain that perfect smile, without having to see the dentist every time.

If you get into knots with floss, drink mouthwash as an aperitif, and use interdental brushes to clean your ears, you need a visit to the hygienist ASAP!

Visit the hygienist to learn the best hygiene techniques for your mouth

Our hygienist, Joann, is available Wednesdays and Fridays in our studio on Nassau Street, and will gently, but thoroughly, clean and polish your mouth, and coax you into better oral hygiene habits. She is also appreciated by us dentists too, as she can clean a mouth better than any of us are able!
